THE business end of the season looms, as the Upper Great Southern Hockey Association finals campaign begins on Saturday, September 6.
The Wagin women’s A grade team has had a great lead up to the finals campaign, finishing as minor premiers for the 2008 season.
The players held strong all season not losing a game, drawing a few and winning most games.
Starting the season with strong numbers of more than 16 willing and able players, the last few weeks have seen number drop slightly with retirements, injury and other commitments, but stil being able to field a full team every week.
The last round was played out and finalised on Saturday, August 30, and it was a successful last round for Wagin.
Saturday, August 9 saw Wagin take on the Narrogin Robins at home on the grass in reasonably warm winter conditions.
An early goal scored by Emily Holt saw Wagin finish the game with one-nil win.
Saturday, August 16 saw Wagin take on the ever unpredictable Mighty Ducks on the turf in Narrogin in an icy cold night game.
With numbers at a minimum, Wagin managed to secure yet another win with Jane Kowald and Sian Wheatley both scoring one goal each. The final score was two to one.
Saturday, August 23 saw Wagin take on the second placed Warriors side. Games against Warriors always proved to be entertaining and great to watch and this one did not disappoint, with this being the first time the Warriors had played on grass for some time.
Wagin’s skills with grass training behind them proved to be the winning element, securing a one-nil win over Warriors.
The last game of the season was played on Tuesday night, August 26 against the Robins on the turf in Narrogin.
With the top position secured for the season, Wagin were instructed by coach Paul Ward to go out and play the controlling game that Wagin played, and to try a few different things on the field.
Patience, control and great passing paid off for the girls, securing a five-nil win.
Goal scorers were Emily Holt one, and Jane Kowald and Sian Wheatley both scoring two each. It was a great way to finish off the season.
Wagin now have the opportunity of securing their place in the grand final, playing in the semi-final on Saturday, September 6 where they will encounter another tough game against Warriors.
A win will put them straight into the final, and a loss gives them another chance the following week.
The Wagin A grade women have had a fine structure this year with having the ever-reliable coach Paul Ward at training and on the sideline of every game all year.
With the ongoing local girls in Terri Spooner, Emily Holt, Fiona Kirk, Nicole McPherson, Jill Moulden, Ang Finlayson, Dominique Hodge, Tori Kirk, Monique Lydiate and Katie Robinson, Wagin’s numbers were boosted by Jane Kowald and Nadine Mitchenden coming across from Katanning and Kojonup to play on the turf.
Lisette Crisp has returned from abroad with partner Bryn Becker and has taken a position on the team, and with the unfortunate lack of numbers at Dumbleyung, Sian Wheatley came across to Wagin.
Numbers at the beginning of the season were more than sufficient, but with the mid-season withdrawal of Leah Kellow, who is extending the family, and Narrelle Parker, with injury forcing her into retirement, numbers settled to a manageable amount.
With such strong numbers and the team being fully fit having a reasonably injury free year, Wagin will go into the finals as a strength to be reckoned with and would have to be considered by their peers as a huge threat for the premiership.
Further notes will be printed in the coming weeks on the progress and results of Wagin’s finals campaign.
Good luck to the Wagin men’s B grade team, who have made the finals too with a convincing win on the weekend.
Now is the time the team appreciates a bit of local support to push them that little bit further in the quest for another Wagin premiership.
