50th anniversary for church

4/09/2008 4:37:00 PM
THE 50TH anniversary of the building of St Anne’s Anglican Church, Lake Grace, was celebrated at a service on Sunday, August 17.

However the history of the Anglican Church in Lake Grace starts well before that.

The Bush Brotherhood of St Boniface was inaugurated in Williams in 1911 and two years later members of the brotherhood began visiting this area.

Traveling was done by horse and sulky.

Farms were visited en route, services conducted, sacraments administered and until 1927 the spiritual needs of the district were cared for.

In 1928 Lake Grace was declared a Mission District and the Rev BW Earle from Wagin became the priest in charge of an area embracing 20 centres and extending as far as Hopetoun.

During this time the original church hall was built at 9 Bennett Street by carpenter James Tetley. The hall was furnished by parishioners and friends and used as a worship centre for more than 20 years.

It is now a much used centre for numerous functions. A present preacher, Pat Strevett, was married in that hall.

Until the appointment of the Rev Len Mauger in 1953, lay readers Sid Bishop, Bob Walker, Ernie Yeo and Bob Nicholson conducted services when there were no visiting clergy available.

Members of the Ladies Guild, including S Bishop, B Walker, E Yeo, D Elliott, J Harvey, G Birt, D Robertson, J Coad, J Bennett, B Slarke, A O’Neill and Mrs Lang worked tirelessly raising funds for a permanent church building.

In December 1953 work started on converting the church hall into a rectory, with room for services being retained until St Anne’s was built.

The new brick church, designed by Marshall Clifton FRAIA and built by Messrs J.and L.Wallis on 7 Bennett St, was finally started in February 1958 at a cost of £6700.

The foundation stone was laid in March 1958 and the building consecrated by the Right Rev RG Hawkins in August 1958.

Eight beautiful stained glass windows were dedicated in the 1990s in memory of family members, replacing plain glass windows.

In 1961 Mr S Bishop donated a house from one of his farms for use as a Parish Centre.

This was relocated to 8 Bennett St, on a block opposite the church given by Mr B Walker.

This centre was much used until it was demolished to make way for the present rectory, built in 1976. The Parish is now cared for by Fr Dave Russell, Terry Gladish and Neil Bishop.

Services are on Sundays at 9am except for the third Sunday which is at 10am.

The Anglican portion of the Lake Grace Cemetery was consecrated on December 16 1961 by Bishop RG Hawkins.
